(SOSO 2008) Series

But it won’t be “so so” it will be great

For 2008 Claro are promoting a series of 5 events designed for beginners and families & kids. However if you already do another sport or are an accomplished athlete these events will also give you a good introduction into this exciting & challenging Sport.

The Spring / Summer SOSO series, consists of 5 events designed to show the variety of Orienteering and to enable the participants to learn about Orienteering in an urban and safe environment. If you enjoy these you can then move onto the wider Orienteering events that take place through out the year and, we hope, join our club and become an enthusiastic member.

For these events no special equipment is needed, you can walk or run, do it for fun or be as competitive as you like. Orienteering is a bit like going on a treasure hunt and kids just love it – especially when they can get out into the great outdoors amongst the trees and rocks and even the mud ! It’s a great challenge for them and much better than sitting at home in front of the TV.

The first event can’t be easier - taking place in the Harrogate Valley Gardens and Pine Woods – and to attract you in, we’re making this one free ! As an additional incentive to come to all the events you can have half price entry to the final event if you make it to all 5. You’ll even get a certificate congratulating you on your achievement.

After the first event the cost is just £2 for an adult and £1 for a child. You’ll need to hire a “dibber” to record your ‘journey’ around the course. This costs just 50p.

All events (except Knaresborough) run from 14:00 to 16:00 - just turn up at anytime in between. Claro club members will be on hand to give you advice.

The events are as follows :

SOSO 1 - Sunday May 18^th - The Valley Gardens & Pine Woods, Harrogate.

To take part turn up by the Green Hut near the Tennis Courts – you won’t be able to miss us !. This event will use the 3 permanent courses in the Valley Gardens, Pine Woods and Birk Crag – so something for all – from short & easy to long and challenging.

SOSO 2 - Saturday May 31^st – A street Orienteering event around Killinghall Moor / Jennyfields.

An event with a difference – you need a pen for this one. All the controls will be existing features (e.g. lampposts, gates etc) and at each one you have to write down the answer to a simple question (e.g. what is the number on the lamppost).

Meet at the Killinghall Moor Community Park which is well sign posted from Jennyfields Drive.

SOSO 3 - Sunday June 22^nd – Knaresborough town centre.

This is our annual Street race. There will be long courses for both Men and Women and an easier shorter course for beginners. This is great fun amongst the many visitors to Knaresborough and amidst the intricate alleyways around the Castle etc. Meet at the Castle between 10:00 and 12:00.

SOSO 4 - Saturday July 12^th - Harlow Hill.

This again will take place in the Valley Gardens and Pine Woods, but with a difference – you can make up your own course !. This is called a Score event, you just see how many controls you can find, but with a small twist – they have to be in pairs. Meet at the car park on Harlow Moor Road by the Harrogate Spa Bottle Water factory.

SOSO 5 – Sunday Aug 3^rd - Conyngham Hall, Knaresborough.

A standard Orienteering event with a long and short course on offer. Make it to this one to claim your certificate. Park in the main car park, off the A59.
