Following on from the successful events in 2008 & 2009, Claro are once again promoting a series events designed for beginners and families & kids.  However if you already do another sport or are an accomplished athlete these events will also give you a good introduction into this exciting & challenging Sport.

The 2010 Spring / Summer SOSO series, consists of 4 events designed to show the variety of Orienteering and to enable the participants to learn about Orienteering in an urban and safe environment.  If you enjoy these you can then move onto the wider Orienteering events that take place through out the year and, we hope, join our club and become an enthusiastic member.

This year we’re promoting two “traditional” type events with kites and punches at each control site and two “treasure hunt” type events where you have to answer the question at each control site.

For these events no special equipment is needed, you can walk or run, do it for fun or be as competitive as you like.  Orienteering is a bit like going on a treasure hunt and kids just love it – especially when they can get out into the great outdoors amongst the trees and rocks and even the mud !  It’s a great challenge for them and much better than sitting at home in front of the TV.

The first event can’t be easier  - taking place on the Stray – the Montpellier & West Park parts of the Stray.

The cost is just £2 for an entry (adults together) and free for children.  You’ll need to hire a “dibber” to record your ‘journey’ around the course.  This costs just 50p.

All events  run from 14:00 to 16:00 on a Saturday (dates below) - just turn up at anytime in between.  Claro club members will be on hand to give you advice.

The events are as follows :

SOSO 1 – Saturday  5^{th June} – West Park Stray.

Turn up and see us at the bottom of Montpellier Hill on the grassy area. 

You won’t be able to miss us – with signs and the registration tent.  This event will have an easy course on the Stray and a harder one going into Valley Gardens for more adventurous souls – so something for all and a great introduction.

SOSO 2 - Saturday 19^th June – A “Treasure Hunt” event  Orienteering around the Bilton Triangle area.

An event with a difference – you need a pen for this one.  All the controls will be existing features (e.g. lampposts, gates etc) and at each one you have to write down the answer to a simple question (e.g. what is the number on the lamppost). There will be 3 courses.

The event start is at the DenePark Community Centre on Woodfield Road. It is at SE 315569 on Dene Park which is just off Woodfield Road.  The 2A bus stops opposite.

SOSO 3 - Saturday 3^rd July – Knaresborough town centre.

Meet at the Castle grounds.

This will also be a Treasure hunt type of event.  Knaresborough is a great place for these events, with the maze of streets and alleyways plus down to the waterside and all the people to deal with !  You can’t help but enjoy it.

SOSO 4 - Saturday 17^th July  - Hookstone Woods.

This follows on from the Great Yorkshire Show where we hope to attract lots more beginners.  Event signed from Hookstone Woods Road.  This will be a traditional event and the first one to venture into the Woods.  The Kids will love it.
