Following on from the successful events in the last four years Claro are once again promoting a series of events designed for beginners and families & kids.  However if you already do another sport or are an accomplished athlete these events will also give you a good introduction into this exciting & challenging Sport.

The 2012 Spring / Summer SOSO series, consists of 5 events designed to show the variety of Orienteering and to enable the participants to learn about Orienteering in an urban and safe environment.  If you enjoy these you can then move onto the wider Orienteering events that take place through out the year and, we hope, join our club and become an enthusiastic member.

This year we’re promoting three “traditional” type events with kites and numbers/letters at each control site and two “treasure hunt” type events where you have to answer the question at each control site.

The events will have 3 courses: White, Yellow and Green.
The White is intended for complete newcomers and does not stray from established major paths
The Yellow  is aimed at newcomers and younger Claro members and still follows paths but there is a little bit of thinking required!
The Green is more difficult and intended for those who have tried orienteering before.

For these events no special equipment is needed, you can walk or run, do it for fun or be as competitive as you like.  Orienteering is a bit like going on a treasure hunt and kids just love it – especially when they can get out into the great outdoors amongst the trees and rocks and even the mud !  It’s a great challenge for them and much better than sitting at home in front of the TV.

The cost is just £2 for an entry (adults together) and £1 for children. 

All events  run from 14:00 to 16:00 on a Saturday (dates below) - just turn up at anytime inbetween.  Claro club members will be on hand to give you advice.

The events are as follows :

 SOSO 1 - Saturday 12^th May  - Hookstone & Bathing Well Woods.

The event will be signed from Hookstone Woods Road.  This will be a traditional event in an easy woodland area.  The Kids will love it.

SOSO 2 - Saturday 23^rd July  - Killinghall Moor Country park.

A treasure hunt style event – you need a pen for this one.  All the controls will be existing features (e.g. lampposts, gates etc) and at each one you have to write down the answer to a simple question (e.g. what is the number on the lamppost).

Meet at the Killinghall Moor Country Park car park just off Barberry Close.

SOSO 3 - Saturday 16^th June – Bilton, Harrogate.

Another treasure hunt style event but this time running round the streets of Bilton. The meeting place is to be confirmed.

SOSO 4 - Saturday 30^th June – Conyngham Hall, Knaresborough.

A traditional event. Park in the Conyngham Hall public car park and follow the orienteering signs.

SOSO 5 – Saturday  14^th July – Valley Gardens, Harrogate.

Turn up and meet us on the grass area just below the Tennis courts. 

You won’t be able to miss us – with signs and the registration tent.  There will be courses using both the top half (woodland) and bottom half of the  Valley Gardens.
